When I was in my early twenties, I decided to become an apprentice to a Master Craftsman called Albert. Albert was the ultimate dreamer, who had left his managerial position at a multinational company, to pursue a career in acting. He would later return to Trinidad without work and so turned to wood work as a source of income.

Albert taught me to “turn wood” on a lathe. He cautioned me to love the process, and enjoy the journey but never fall so in love with anything that I was making that I could not give it up/sell it/let it go.

One day I came across a piece of wood while rummaging and brought it to Albert. “That is a gem” he said. “Purple Heart is a very hard wood. It is the cause of a great deal of frustration among both novices and advanced wood turners. You want to give it a try?”

So I penciled my X’s and found the centre, hammered my Purple Heart find into place and proceeded to make what would become my Purple Heart baton.

As it always is with Purple Heart - the potential rewards and possibilities are seemingly endless, but failure is constantly lurking. Albert helped me along as I struggled until I began to see some semblance of a baton taking shape.

The people that I meet and the businesses that I work with are often like a piece of Purple Heart. Their situations are often challenging and sometimes I just don’t have all the answers. But like my wood turning experience, I know that while I needed to master a few techniques and learn a couple of tricks, what really reaps success is the right attitude, common sense, and most of all perseverance!

How I think and work

Context is EVERYTHING! What has guided me most as a writer is the confluence where passion and opportunity (and sometimes luck) meet and lead to the right context, for the right idea, at the right time, in the right place, and for the right customer.

I am both creative and analytical but intuitively, if I sense an opportunity to reframe something that I’m working on - then I charge forward – giving it my best shot.

As a scientist, I will experiment with ideas and approaches however I will remain grounded in the solid and foundational aspects of your business, its methods and its traditions.
