Most of us see marketing as an art. Many people claim that they’re not “marketing experts” or that marketing is not their forte.
Some see marketing as a science. I would tend to agree here unless of course your thoughts include another word before science…namely: EXACT.
Many see marketing as an exact science: If you do this you’re going to get these results – period. Once you follow the recipe, ingredient by ingredient, your results are pre-determined across the board.
Each business is different, not because of the business but because of the person behind the business – YOU!
My view of marketing is a combination of history, science and economics.
When consulting with clients I will take into consideration my experience with other businesses combined with my reading research, plus a dash of my own personal experience. In other words based on all the evidence, I will give my best advice for moving forward. My decisions may, or may not, predict results. So, truthfully, marketing is also gamble.
A good relationship requires the client to understand, and accept, that the consultant's function is really risk management.
However the odds are stacked in your favor because I have a broad knowledge of proven marketing techniques; I know what has worked for other businesses; and I can see the parallels between my client's issues and similar problems that other industries have solved.
When a client paints their situation picture, I can recognize not only the factors which can derail the business, but also the opportunities that can help the client leapfrog over his/her competitors.
